What is the SAT exam for? Principally, to assess a student’s expertise in Reading & Writing and Mathematics, as well as the reasoning skills that predict college success. Most colleges compare SAT scores with high school grades when making admissions decisions.

The SAT in India and some other countries also switched to a computer-assisted format, beginning in 2023 earlier globally.

SAT Exam Syllabus

The scope of the SAT exam syllabus for the 2025–26 cycle is organized around two primary content categories:

  • Reading & Writing (R&W) — craft & structure, information & ideas, expression of ideas, and standard English conventions.
  • Mathematics — algebra, advanced math, problem-solving & data analysis, and geometry/trigonometry.

All in all, you will encounter 98 questions (54 R&W, 44 Math) over a 2-hour and 14-minute period (not including an optional break).

SAT Exam Pattern

The SAT has a multi-stage adaptive design: it contains two modules per section.

SectionModulesQuestionsTime
Reading & Writing25464 min (2 × 32 min)
Math24470 min (2 × 35 min)

Scores are between 400 and 1600, combining test results for R&W and Math.

As the exam is adaptive, there is not a fixed grouping of “easy vs hard” questions up front, instead, students must be accurate throughout.
